On April 22th 2017 marches to support science were held in more than 600 cities around the world. The initiative emerged in the United States as a response to the deep concern of scientists and citizens reacting to the growing wave of anti-scientific policies and the erosion of the social image of science. Soon after, cities from all over the world joined the movement.
In Barcelona SciDF mobilized the scientific community and organized the March for Science Barcelona 2017. The event, which took place at the PRBB, comprised a round table discussion on the role of science in political decisions, various science and comedy shows, scientific activities for children, Earth-Day related activities, food and music. Also, at the beginning of the event a manifesto was read by the organizers and many of the over 500 attendees had banners with slogans in favour of science on them.
A great number of scientific institutions and personalities gave official support for the March for Science 2017 – Barcelona, and most media from the region, including TV, covered this happening.
The round table about ‘Science as a decision driver in politics?’ was moderated by Cristina Ribas, Biologist, Journalist, Responsible of Digital Communication at the Barcelona City Council and President of the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), and counted with the following panel:
